If a cat is peeing on your furniture it can be a very frustrating experience. Most cats are good about using their litter box but some of these animals can get a little more creative at times and choose other areas, including your furniture. For some cat owners this can be enough reason to want to abandon the cat. But in many cases this problem is easy to fix.

One of the most simple solutions is to give the cat more reasons to use the litter box and less to use your furniture. Cats like to be clean, which is one of the reasons they make such good pets. They naturally want to keep their waste material out of their living space. When outdoors, cats usually find places where they can easily dig and use those areas for waste elimination so they can bury it.

This behavior makes litter training cats easy since it is in line with their natural behavior. If a cat is going somewhere else, the first thing to consider is how inviting the litter box is. If it is not kept maintained and the cat is not supplied with clean places to dig, they may be more likely to avoid the litter box at times.

If the cat still insists on using your furniture, you can try making the furniture less appealing. Using odors that cats do not like, such as white vinegar, can discourage the cat from even getting on the furniture to begin with. You can splash just enough of it on the furniture so the cat can smell it but it won't run you out of the house. If the cat has a certain spot where it likes to pee, you can try putting aluminum foil on the spot. For some reason cats don't like to walk on it.

Use positive reinforcement with a treat when the cat uses the litter box and avoid yelling or trying to punish the cat for misbehaving. Cats do not respond well to punishment and it may only make them fear you. If these tips do not solve the problem, you may want to have your cat checked by a vet to make sure there are not any medical problems.
